GAZA (Ma’an) — The al-Quds Open University in the Gaza Strip suspended classes for the second day on Tuesday over a dispute with its Hamas-affiliated student bloc.Yassir Odeh, the university’s head of student affairs, said that the Hamas-affiliated students had “closed the university” and were refusing to negotiate a solution to the dispute. He did not specify the nature of the dispute, although he insisted that the university had been closed by the the students, and not by the university administration.Student bodies in Palestinian universities have become deeply politicized, mostly falling along factional lines represented in wider Palestinian society. In the absence of national elections, student elections have come to be seen as an important expression of Palestinian political aspirations.
